"Take a little, leave a lot"
By Bob Perks
You have so much good to offer the world and the world is hungry for goodness. On this walk through life, we pause along the way to appreciate what see, who we meet and what we learn from them.
In order for us to grow we must take a little from each encounter. We feed our mind, body and spirit and move on.
It is important now more than ever before, for each of us to take a little and leave a lot more behind. For there are those who are starving for kindness, love, and hope.
Your unique perspective on life based on the gifts God has given you, must be shared.
It is in getting we build fortunes, but it is in giving we build a better world.
"Outstanding!"
"That's what I aim for. That's what I want to be. I won't settle for average. Even good enough won't do. If I am going to try at all, I must always try to be the very best I can be. There's no real effort in just "being." Outstanding takes work and dedication. Why shouldn't it? That's why one would stand out above the rest because they worked harder for it."

There's something about the wind
There's something about the wind. At full force it can be destructive and we hide in fear.
On a hot, humid day it can be refreshing and welcome.
If you are going to set your dreams sailing make sure you know what direction you want to go.
Don't just toss everything in the wind and hope.
Some won't even try because they feel the wind is against them..."too much work"..."impossible to sail against the wind."
Still it is done everyday by others who know how to use the wind to their advantage.
The rest stand upon the shore waving goodbye.
Life's challenges are like the wind. One must learn how to use the power in order to gain control.
"That which can knock you down can also make you stronger!" Bob Perks

The early bird...
Early Bird
"Oh if you're a bird, be an early bird.
And catch the worm for your breakfast plate.
If you're a bird, be an early bird--
But if you're a worm, sleep late."
Shel Silverstein, "Where the sidewalk ends"
There is much to be said about being early, getting ahead of everyone else. All the successful people do it. You would think then that there would be more than enough early birds out there and the field would be over crowded.
There may be something to be said about the early bird but the one that gets up early and makes a plan for the day. A plan that requires an early start but has direction. A plan that requires one to scout out the best places the day before while all those early birds have given up for the day.
Early and no plan does not always make for a successful day.
Like action, movement doesn't necessarily mean progress.
Plan ahead, be early, know where you are going and what you want.

The man I never met before, I met again.
I saw a man yesterday. I hadn't seen him in years. Almost 64 years. You see, I really had never met him before in my life. The point is, we met. We met at that moment and it took almost 64 years to finally learn something I had not learned before.
I learned that when he was a child his mother taught him the name of every flower in their garden. There were over 100 different names.
I was amazed because he began to recite them. That was nice until about the 25th flower. I was grateful that his wife rescued me.
"Not again, James. I'm sure this man is impressed, but I don't think he needs to hear all 100 names."
I smiled politely and by doing so I thanked her for interrupting us.
So, what did I learn from this man I hadn't seen in years?
It wasn't that he could remember the names of 100 flowers. It was that he practiced remembering every chance he had.
There are gifts we were given. There are talents we've not used in a very long time. Perhaps right now at this point in your life you are trying to figure out what you want to do. You want to know where you want to go and what can you do to re-invent yourself.
Maybe, just maybe, it's time to go back to the beginning and dust off the things you already know.
The ability to name each state and its capital just might make you a travel agent or a tour guide. Bring along a camera and you're suddenly a travel photographer, Michelle.
Make a list of all the things you wanted to be and maybe it's time to be one.

Do you want to lose weight? Have faith!
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2 NIV)
"Many of us believe we can multi-task without limits. However our brain isn’t a computer; it can’t run different programs simultaneously. When we think we are “multi-tasking,” we are actually switching rapidly between tasks. Our attention is divided. That’s why people crash their cars when they try to text and drive.
And it’s why people crash in their journey to get healthy. Getting healthy the right way requires a relentless focus on God and his plan for healthy living. You must focus on what’s most important and not allow yourself to get distracted by the trivial. If Satan can’t get you to do wrong, he’ll simply wear you out with a lot of good things. He’ll get you over-committed to the good but not the best.
The Bible says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2 NIV).
As you make the commitment to get healthy, lay aside what doesn’t matter so you can focus on Jesus and his plan for your body."
Thanks to my friend Hannah for this insight.

Putting out the fires in life.
Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have - life itself.

There are three steps to understanding your challenges in life:
1. Describe in detail what happened and why.
2. List how you feel about what has happened.
3. Decide what it is you want from this experience.
Often times we spend days, weeks, and even months worried and overwhelmed before we really understand what actually happened. Responding in a logical way trying to see the whole picture helps to keep the irrational responses to a limit.
Once you decide what you want to take away from it, you can create a plan on how to deal with it.
Learn to put out the fires in life as quickly as possible before they get out of control.

Earth Day, your day, my day
“We do not inherit the planet from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."
― Native American Saying
Celebrate Earth Day by making or renewing your commitment to put back more than you take. Keep in mind that we all have a responsibility to care for what we have been placed in charge of, whether it be the earth, our children or each other.
Part of making changes in our lives is to recognize that everything we do impacts many others. If you were painting a picture, each stroke added to the painting enhances or detracts from other parts of that picture.
So, today is indeed a celebration of Earth, but also a recognition of our responsibility to care for each other.

Connecting the head and the heart
"An important teacher once said to me: "The longest journey in life is only eighteen inches--connecting the head and the heart." Eric Allenbaugh, Ph.d.
The head is thinking, establishing competence, while the figurative heart is the ability to love and be loved. The connection once established creates balance in our lives. Not finding that balance often creates missed opportunities
Those who live by the logical, objective, systematic head miss the emotional, feeling related
events of life.
Those who live by the feelings, intangible, "inner voice," heart, miss significant opportunities to advance toward life's goals.
If we are so one sided we will miss opportunities that often times cannot be recreated.
In order to make the changes you want to make in your life at this time, you must examine closer the head/heart connection.

Living the "Good Life"
The Good Life! How would you define it?
No worries.
A job you enjoy.
No debt.
To love and be loved.
The Good Life doesn't mean an easy life. Having what you want takes planning. Planning
takes work. Work is Good.
The thing is that each of us has our own definition. What might be "good" for one
may not be for another.
I do believe that whatever our definition is, we must also include the ability to compromise.
Not on values or morals. Not our faith. Little things. Like having a piece of the dream instead of
nothing at all.
B.F. Skinner said, "The one fact that I would cry from every housetop is this: the Good Life is
waiting for us---here and now."
If you need help deciding what your "Good Life" should be, consider contacting me.

You were loved even before you were conceived
If there's one thing I've learned about love, it's that it takes persistence. Oh and patience.
I can't leave out passion, respect, devotion, tenderness, commitment, hindsight, insight, foresight,
forgiveness, for goodness sake...it takes everything you have!
If you see everything you need and want in another person it should require everything you have to offer.
Once loved, one never can be unloved. You were loved before you were conceived. After all is gone, love remains. For love is not a thing. Love is because we are. We are because love is.

I'll see you in Paris!
It seems to me that the only way to really get ahead in life is to take steps that always lead you toward your goal. No side stepping. No turnaround. If all you accomplish is one step forward, then it is still progress. It's those two steps backwards we need to avoid.
So how do you do that?
Make deliberate moves. Don't change course that day unless it is to go around obstacles or others who gave up and sat down in the middle of the road you are on. Pause, recalculate, consider new challenges as they arise, but never, ever go back. Even if you have to pull over and make adjustments to the plan.
Don't go back. You are not there any more. If you are really planning change in your life, you are already where you want to be...in your mind.
Some people say, "I'll believe it when I see it."
Winners say, "I'll see it when I believe it!"
I want to go to Paris, France one day. I already see myself sitting at a small café. Perhaps you will join me if it's on the way to your dream?

Young in spirit
"The spirit is always young no matter how old the flesh."
I do this every once in awhile to make sure it's really me. I look in the mirror.
It's true. Oh, not just a glance, or when I'm shaving, but on purpose, eye ball to eye ball.
I take my time. I study my face.
I step back. I move in closer. No it's not vanity. I am just checking to make sure it's really me.
You see, the image I have of myself is etched in my mind. It's not an image as a teen. It's not an image of a young man. I am somewhere between now and then. Somewhere between, "I liked this point in my life" and "I have to accept that I am older now."
Who I refer to as the "real me," is alive and well inside. I'm just looking out through the eyes of an older man.
I am mature enough to know better, but young enough to still take chances.
I am old enough to have learned what works and what doesn't and young enough to reject "I can't"
I don't do my mirror check to break my spirit. I do it because I know as long as I can look
in the mirror and know deep in my heart I am, in spirit, still young, then there lies ahead of me many
years of adventure, potential, and hope.

Filling the swamp
Filling the swamp...
It is said that to fill a swamp with stones, a hundred loads may disappear under the water
before a single stone appears on the surface, but all of them are necessary.
It may appear to you that you have been trying to change your life and you haven't
seen results. Perhaps all of your efforts are about to pay off with the next attempt.
When building a skyscraper, it is the foundation that holds the key. The deeper the
foundation the taller the building.
What we see is the building, but much effort was put into the unseen foundation.
Keep going, my friend. You are about to see a break through. Aim high!

From, to, and why

to learn before they die
what they are running from, and to, and why."
~James Thurber
It seems to be the essence of any real understanding of self.
You must first ask, "What am I running from? Where am I running
to? And Why?
Once you understand that, you can begin to construct a plan.
Every permanent change needs a plan.

Testing the waters
"Only a fool tests the depth of the water with both feet."
- African Proverb
I love the idea of testing the ground I am about to walk on. I think in reference to the above quote, I still would rather test the water with a big stick.Testing the road ahead can't always be done. Sometimes you may be traveling too fast. Sometimes
you need to trust the GPS system provided by God and slow down enough so that you don't get ahead of it.
"Recalculating" is what you'll hear when you make the wrong turn.
Or the sounds of the tow truck because you trusted too much.
Of course the choice is always yours.

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye."
Plan to grow!
"If we don't change, we don't grow.
If we don't grow, we aren't really living."
